Sticker spacing matters
Use dry, straight stickers (¾″–1″ thick) every 12–24 inches. Align them vertically so weight transfers straight down. Warped stickers cause bow and crook in your lumber.
Air drying can't reach low MC
In most temperate climates, air drying bottoms out at 12–15% MC — the equilibrium for outdoor conditions. To reach 6–8% for indoor furniture, you must finish in a kiln or a heated, dehumidified space.
Check end grain first
End grain loses moisture 10–15× faster than face grain. Seal end grain with wax, latex paint, or commercial end-grain sealer within hours of sawing to prevent end checking.
Weigh, don't guess
A moisture meter is the only reliable way to know when lumber is dry. Pin meters work fine for most species; for dense exotics, use a calibrated pinless meter with species correction.
