Sitka Spruce
Sitka Spruce has the best stiffness-to-weight ratio of any commercial wood — a property so valuable it built aircraft frames in both World Wars and remains the benchmark for acoustic guitar and violin soundboards. For instrument building, ring count matters: look for 10–20 tight, even growth rings per inch, no runout, and a consistent grain. It works like a dream — cuts cleanly, glues well, finishes easily. Outside of instrument building and specialty structural work, it's somewhat underused by woodworkers who don't realize what they're working with.

Creamy white to pale pinkish-brown throughout; little distinction between heartwood and sapwood. Old-growth material has much tighter growth rings and a correspondingly higher stiffness-to-weight ratio. Takes stain readily.
