Plain-Language Guide
Sapele is one of the most underrated hardwoods in the game — that ribbon stripe figure is stunning, it machines well, and it's widely available in Europe at a reasonable price point. If you've been sleeping on it because it's not a 'famous' species, wake up.
Common Mistakes
- Ignoring grain direction on the jointer — interlocked grain will snipe if you're going the wrong direction
- Using sapele without checking FSC certification — the species is IUCN Vulnerable; sourcing matters
- Treating it like a budget substitute for mahogany — sapele has better figure and deserves to be selected on its own merits
