Monkeypod
Monkeypod has become the defining live-edge slab wood. Those massive restaurant tabletops with natural edges and resin-filled voids? Very often monkeypod. The wide-spreading trees produce enormous, dramatically figured slabs that are nearly impossible to replicate in any other species. Works easily and finishes beautifully. The main challenges are sourcing properly flattened material and filling the natural voids with epoxy — which has become a craft unto itself.

Rich golden to chocolate brown heartwood, often with darker streaks and varied figure across the slab. Wide contrast between the dark heartwood and pale cream sapwood. Natural voids and bark inclusions are typical.
Soft for its visual impact and price point. Relatively easy to machine and sand. Responds well to oil finishes. Interlocked grain needs some care when planing. Coarse texture shows open grain under clear finishes.
