Plain-Language Guide

Genuine mahogany is the wood that defined centuries of fine furniture — from 18th-century English antiques to vintage Gibson guitars. It works unlike almost anything else: planes glass-smooth, takes finish like a dream, and ages beautifully. The supply chain is where attention is required. Wild-harvest Swietenia is CITES II restricted, so most commercial lumber is plantation-grown. That's perfectly fine — plantation mahogany can be excellent — but always ask your supplier for documentation. It's worth paying for verified sourcing.

Common Mistakes
  • Buying without provenance documentation — wild-harvest material is legally problematic
  • Confusing it with African Mahogany (Khaya) — genuinely different species
  • Under-appreciating how well it takes a hand-plane — this is where you practice those skills
Color & Appearance
Heartwood
Sapwood
