Plain-Language Guide

Cocobolo is the premium choice for turning and small decorative work — the color variation is extraordinary and the fine grain self-finishes to a mirror sheen with just oil or wax. Three things demand attention: it's CITES II (all Dalbergia spp.), so documentation is required when purchasing; the natural oils make gluing nearly impossible without solvent prep; and it is one of the most potent wood allergens known to woodworkers. Some people develop severe reactions after years of safe use. Full dust protection, always, without exception.

Common Mistakes
  • Gluing without solvent prep — the oils prevent any adhesive from curing
  • Ignoring the allergen risk — sensitization can happen suddenly, even after years of use
  • Buying without CITES documentation — all Dalbergia requires paperwork since 2017

Heavy and hard, but fine-grained so it turns and shapes to an excellent surface. Natural oils make it essentially self-finishing — many turners apply just oil or wax for a mirror sheen. Those same oils make gluing nearly impossible without wiping with acetone or lacquer thinner first. CITES II for all Dalbergia spp. — requires documentation. Strong allergen and sensitizer — full protection mandatory.
